Portuguese is the sixth most spoken Language in the world after Mandarin, Hindi , Spanish, English and Bengali.
It is the official Language of eight Countries (Angola,Brazil, Cape-Vert, East-Timor, Guinea-Bissau,Mozambique,Portugal,as well as S.Tomé and Príncipe ).
If you are of Portuguese descent , the Portuguese language is an important element of your culture and background as well as a powerful contribution to multicultural Australia / Nerw Zealand . For other Australians/ New Zealanders, it is a powerful instrument to understand and communicate with people from the eight Portuguese Speaking Countries. Language is also a wonderful trade facilitator.
In 2000, UNESCO estimated that there were more than 176 million Portuguese speakers around the World.
As with other Languages its use, in an environment where another Language is more widely used on a daily basis, requires persistence. Save time to read, talk or write in Portuguese.
Do not hesitate to take further studies in Portuguese either at school or at University.

PORTUGUESE STUDIES IN NSW
University level
Portuguese was taught at UNSW for the first time in 2002, with the generous support of the Portuguese Government through the Camoes Institute. After the transfer of the Lecturer Francisco Nazaré , by Instituto Camões,at the end of 2003, the UNSW has interrupted the teaching of Portuguese .
Following a proposal from the former Lecturer and the Consulate-General of Portugal in Sydney, there is a possibility that Macquarie University will integrate the teaching of Portuguese in future Timorese Studies. Portugal ´s Instituto Camões is developing contacts with the University of Oporto for the possible support of this project.

EÇA DE QUEIRÓS
(English Version/Introduction by V.S. Pritchett to Cousin Basilio, translated by Roy Campbell)
EÇA DE QUEIRÓS
Now we come to one of the best of all Portuguese novelists, Eça de Queirós.
Born in 1843 at Póvoa do Varzim, in Northern of Portugal Eça de Queirós was the son of a magistrate and went on to study law in Coimbra. After travelling widely he entered the diplomatic service.
He served as a consul in Havana, Newcastle, Bristol and Paris where he died in 1900.But despite the extent of his diplomatic career Eça de Queirós´ lasting legacy has been his work as a novelist.
His literary work began with essays, travel articles and short stories but was followed by his early novels ´The Sin of Father Amaro´ in 1876 and ´Cousin Basilio´ in 1878. These works, influenced by the naturalism of Flaubert, Balzac and Zola, won him recognition as a writer of European standing.
´The Maias´in 1866 cemented his growing reputation.
The voice in these novels is urbane and amused but denounces the pretention, hypocrisies and greed surrounding the human condition. Nevertheless his work has a special compassion for the frailty of human happiness.
In his later works, which include `The Illustrious House of Ramires´ and ´The City and the Mountain´, he turned his irony to the liberal reformers and the idea of progress itself.
