The Community Today


According to the Australian 2001 census 15440 landed immigrants have indicated Portugal as their birth place in 2001. The Consulate estimates that when the second generation Australians  of Portuguese descent are included, having taken into account the total numbers of Portuguese registered in all Portuguese Consular areas in Australia,the total number of Portuguese settled in Australia is larger than 50,000.

Their distribution in Australia involves approx. 60% in New South Wales, 18% in Victoria,15% in Western Australia, 4% in Queensland, 3% in South Australia, 1.5% in the Australian Capital Territory , 1.2 % in the Northern Territory and 0.1% in Tasmania.

In New South Wales the main areas of settlement are in Sydney and Wollongong. In Sydney approximately 11000 Portuguese reside many in and around the suburbs of Marrickville and Petersham.

Wollongong , is also home to a vibrant Portuguese community with approx. 2300 Portuguese settled in this area.

In the remaining States and Territories special reference should be made to the communities established in Melbourne (Victoria) and in Perth/Fremantle (Western Australia).

PORTUGUESE CULTURAL FOUNDATION

1) The Portuguese Cultural Foundation was founded in October 2000 in Sydney.

The Foundation promotes Portugal in Australia in the areas of Language Teaching, Education, History, Culture, Science, Research, Sports and Media. It also promotes the Portuguese Community in Australia strengthening links between Portuguese and Australian institutions.

WEBSITE TO YOUNG PEOPLE OF PORTUGUESE BACKGROUND

With the support from the Portuguese Cultural Foundation, members of the Portuguese Community in Australia have launched in 2005 a global website involving young people of Portuguese Background living in Australia:  Global I s Web site project

The Global I s web site project intends to reach out to young people from Portuguese Backgrounds living in Australia. The web site will feature a section with individual profiles of Portuguese young people from around Australia, where they will talk about themselves, what they like, what they do, where they hang out, what they think etc. The site will also have information about Portugal and Portuguese communities in Australia.

It´s organisers have sent the following message to Young People of Portuguese Background (up to 25 yrs) :

" It is said that the Portuguese were the first Europeans to discover Australia.

Now it ´s YOUR turn to be explorers in Cyberspace.

We would like YOU to be a part of this new and exciting web site that will be seen by everyone. IT WILL BE ABOUT YOU AND FOR YOU.
